New Trash Collection Program begins July 1

Following months of research and negotiations, the City of Atlanta is pleased to announce changes to residential trash management that will provide significant savings when compared to the current trash service.

By City Ordinance, residential trash and recycling will join water and sewer as a Municipal Service. That means trash and recycling will be invoiced by the City along with monthly water and sewer services. The new cost for trash and recycling will be $22.50 per month (includes 95-gallon container). Please note, residential trash collection is no longer optional. If you receive a water and sewer bill, you will also be paying for trash collection.

The City is able to provide these significant savings, because they have entered into a 5-year agreement for trash and recycling with Republic Services (Bloomington). By committing to the multi-year agreement, the City hopes to avoid any rate increases for the duration of the contract.

GFL will collect any of their company provided trash containers following trash pickup on Monday, June 27. Republic will deliver one 95-gallon trash container to each household later that day.

Republic will begin collecting Atlanta’s residential trash on Friday, July 1. Trash collection day will be every Friday beginning in July. Our new agreement also provides weekly bulk pick up (such as furniture, mattresses, etc) if the resident requests the service by email  (atlantabulk@republicservices.com) or by calling City Hall at least 24 hours in advance to guarantee the item is picked up. White goods (washers and dryers, for example) will be collected for a small fee with advance notification as well.

Recycling is included in the trash collection service at no additional cost. Households who wish to participate in the recycling program must contact City Hall to request those containers. Recycling containers will be provided later and be collected every two weeks. Below are links to two informational flyers that will be attached to the trash cans delivered on Monday, June 27.
